Ford Motor Co said on Wednesday it will start making a sport utility vehicle in China, the first time it has made one there, as sales in the world's biggest car market continue to surge.

Demand for SUVs has been growing rapidly in China as more people join the middle class and seek vehicles that can handle both city driving and off-road terrain.

Ford's move follows plans by General Motors Co and Volkswagen AG to produce more SUVs in China. GM said this month it would build 10 new SUVs in the country by 2020.

Ford said it would start building the Explorer SUV at its plant in Hangzhou, eastern China, from 2019. The company already builds cars in China with local partner Jiangling Motor Corp Ltd.

"The decision to produce Explorer in Hangzhou next year is part of our effort to better meet the needs of Chinese customers," Peter Fleet, Ford's president for Asia-Pacific, told Reuters.

The move could help Ford counter rivals who have been eating into its market share in China. In the first 10 months of this year, Ford's sales fell 6 percent from a year earlier while GM's rose 3 percent and VW's were up 5 percent.
